Lords Communications Committee to visit University of Strathclyde to discuss the future of public service broadcasters
On Thursday 27 June the House of Lords Communications Committee will host an event at the University of Strathclyde to hear the public's views on the rising popularity of subscription video on demand services and the impact on public service broadcasters.
Chairman of the Committee Lord Gilbert, said:
“Public service broadcasters such as the BBC, STV and Channel 4, have a legal commitment to reflect and serve all the communities of the UK. We want to ask, “Are they really delivering on this?” We will explore with the viewers how their viewing preferences are changing and whether content produced by public service broadcasters is still relevant to them.
“Glasgow is an ideal venue to host this discussion - as the home of BBC Scotland, STV as well as universities with experts in media, we will gain a valuable insight into viewing habits of the public and how they engage with programming.”
The discussion will begin at 14:30 and will cover topics including:
- What services the participants use
- If public service broadcasting reflects the participants' communities
- Whether it matters if public service broadcasters are no longer relevant
- What could public service broadcasters do to appeal more to appeal to the participants.
