Lords to debate the representation of future generations in policymaking

The debate will be opened by Crossbench peer and founder of The Big Issue, Lord Bird MBE, and held in the House of Lords Chamber.

Members scheduled to speak include Lord Crisp, Lord Judd, Baroness Massey of Darwen, the Lord Bishop of Oxford, and Lord Storey.

Speaking ahead of the debate, Lord Bird said:

“When it comes to solving the big issues of the climate crisis and poverty, it's essential for future generations that we shift to a long-term, preventative and forward-looking approach to policymaking.

“This is a question of social justice. Are we prepared to change the way we think, plan and budget to make the voices of future generations heard in our democracy? It's a question we all need to answer.”

Baroness Stedman-Scott will respond on behalf of the Government.

The debate is expected to start at some point after 11.30am on Thursday 20 June 2019, and likely before 3.00pm.
