Immigration Minister to be questioned on EU migration for work and asylum cooperation post-Brexit

On Wednesday 13th March the House of Lords EU Home Affairs Sub-Committee will question Caroline Nokes MP, Minister of State for Immigration on the future options for EU migration to the UK for work and UK-EU asylum cooperation after Brexit.

In the first half of the session, the Committee will ask questions about the Government's Immigration White Paper, focusing on changes to the routes for EU nationals to come to the UK for work. If ‘no deal' is still a possibility, the Committee will also ask whether the UK is seeking reciprocal arrangements for UK citizens arriving in the EU after exit day in a ‘no deal' scenario.

Questions the Committee are likely to ask on EU migration for work include:

  • Will the new immigration system be implemented in its entirety in 2021, or will there be a phased transition process?
  • What nationalities will be able to apply for the one-year work visa outlined in the Immigration White Paper?
  • What is the rationale for not allowing people who come to the UK on this one-year visa route to switch directly to another visa route?

In the second half of the session, the Committee will ask the Minister about the Government's aims for future UK-EU asylum cooperation, and what preparations the Government has made to limit the impact on separated families of a ‘no deal' scenario.

Questions the Committee are likely to ask on UK-EU asylum cooperation include:

  • Will the Government seek to continue to participate in the Dublin system and if so, what might such participation look like?
  • Following the recent CJEU judgment in the case of A and S v The Netherlands, what consideration has the Government given to the possibility that the EU might expect the UK to allow parents to join children in a future asylum cooperation framework?
  • Do you expect future UK-EU asylum cooperation to encompass mechanisms for the relocation of asylum seekers?

The session will begin at 10:00am in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.
