Science Minister and Chief Scientific Advisor to be questioned by Lords

On Tuesday 5th March  the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee will question Chris Skidmore MP, Minister for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation and Sir Patrick Vallance, the Government's Chief Scientific Advisor.

The Minister will be questioned on his department's preparations for Brexit and the Government's strategy for increasing investment in research and development.

Sir Patrick Vallance will be asked about the challenges in joining up science-based policy across Government.

The evidence session will begin at 3.25pm in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords.

Other questions the Committee are likely to ask include:

  • What assessment has the Minister made of the UK science sector's readiness for the UK's departure from the EU?
  • What update can be provided on the Department's strategy to raise total investment in UK research and development to 2.4 per cent of GDP?
  • Is the Government Chief Scientific Adviser's relationship with the Science Minister distinct from their relationship with Ministers in Departments other than BEIS or DfE?
  • As more responsibilities are devolved from central government to City Regions and Mayors, is there a need for an extra layer to the CSA structure, working at and city level?
