Lords to take evidence on Boris' Brexit plan

The House of Lords EU Committee will tomorrow take evidence on the Government's proposed amended Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland.

The Committee will hear from Charles Grant, Director at the Centre for European Reform and Victoria Hewson, Head of Regulatory Affairs at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA).

The session will start at 10:30am on Tuesday 8 October in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords. Issues the session will cover include:

  • Whether the proposals provide a sufficient basis for further negotiations with the EU and how the critical responses from Ireland and the EU affect that.
  • Does the proposal for an all-island regulatory zone covering all goods mark a significant step forward from Theresa May's deal?
  • What are the likely political implications on business of the Government's proposals regarding customs controls on the island of Ireland?
  • How realistic is the Government's proposal to develop a system of electronic customs checks by the end of the transition period?
  • Are the proposals for the Northern Ireland Executive and Assembly to endorse the arrangements before they enter force and then every four years afterwards realistic.
