The state of NATO: Lords Committee reviews the alliance ahead of London meeting
On Wednesday 30 October the House of Lords International Relations and Defence Committee will hear from the President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, and a former UK Permanent Representative to NATO, in a special session ahead of the NATO Leader's Meeting in London in December.
The session will focus on the challenges facing the alliance in the run up to the meeting.
Giving evidence at 10.40am in Committee Room 4 will be:
- Madeline Moon MP, Member of Parliament for Bridgend, and President, NATO Parliamentary Assembly
- Sir Adam Thomson KCMG, Director, European Leadership Network, and former UK Permanent Representative to NATO (2014-2016)
Questions are likely to include:
- What do you see as the biggest short and long-term challenges facing the Alliance, and how is this assessment shaping the agenda for the NATO meeting?
- In the first years of President Trump's Administration there were heightened concerns regarding transatlantic burden-sharing and Washington's commitment to NATO. To what extent have these concerns abated?
- To what extent can NATO claim to be united in the context of Turkey's purchase of the S-400 missile system from Russia and its recent offensive in Northern Syria?
- What is your current assessment of the state of relations between NATO and Russia?
- How effectively do you think the United Kingdom is exercising its influence in the Alliance, and how do you think our withdrawal from the EU will affect this influence?
