UK citizens living in the EU after ‘no deal' Brexit: Lords seek update from Government
The House of Lords EU Justice Sub-Committee has written to the Secretary of State for Exiting the EU, asking what steps the Government have taken to protect the right of UK citizens living in the EU in the event of a ‘no deal' Brexit.
Around 1.3million UK citizens are living in other EU states, and it is unclear what rights they will have in their country of residence when the UK leaves the EU.
Lord Morris of Aberavon, who chairs the Sub-Committee, has written to Brexit minister Stephen Barclay MP to ask for a detailed update on the status of these individuals in the case of a ‘no deal' Brexit, particularly in relation to access to healthcare, social security and pensions. The Sub-Committee are aware that the ongoing uncertainty is causing significant levels of concern amongst UK citizens living in the EU and intend to conduct further work on this issue between now and 31 October, when the UK is currently expected to leave the EU.
