Brexit negotiations: Lords Committee launches inquiry on future Security cooperation post-transition

Friday 18 December 2020

The Lords Security and Justice EU Sub-Committee has today launched a brief inquiry on post-Brexit UK-EU law enforcement and security cooperation, as attempts to agree a deal on the future UK-EU relationship continue.

As the transition period draws to a close on 31 December 2020, the Committee are seeking evidence on what has been agreed regarding the UK’s continued participation in the criminal justice and security mechanisms, agencies and databases to which it had access as a Member State, and, where there is no agreement, the likely effectiveness of Government contingency planning.

The evidence sessions for the inquiry will be held in January and early February 2021 and will include evidence from law enforcement practitioners and academics.

Topics for discussion:

  • Future UK-EU collaboration on extradition and replacement for the European Arrest Warrant
  • Replacement for UK access to the Schengen Information System
  • Replacement for UK participation in Europol and Eurojust
  • Future arrangements for the sharing of DNA, fingerprint and vehicle registration data
  • Government contingency plans for law enforcement, policing and security cooperation if the Commission does not make a data adequacy decision in favour of the UK
