Experts to give evidence on key challenges of the national risk assessment process
Tuesday 1 December 2020
The House of Lords Risk Assessment and Risk Planning Committee will tomorrow question experts on the key challenges in risk assessment, as well as risk policy, characterisation of risk and building national resilience.
The session will take place virtually on Wednesday 2 December at 10:30am and can be followed on Parliament TV.
Giving evidence will be:
- Professor David Alexander, Professor of Risk and Disaster Reduction, Institute for Risk & Disaster Reduction, University College London
- Piers Millet, Senior Research Fellow, Future of Humanity Institute, University of Oxford
- Professor Ortwin Renn, Scientific Director at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies in Potsdam, Germany
Questions the Committee is likely to ask include:
- What are the key challenges associated with national risk assessment and risk planning?
- Are there particular types of risks for which the UK is poorly prepared for?
- Is there enough engagement with independent experts during the national risk assessment and risk planning process?
- What weaknesses has the COVID-19 pandemic exposed in the national risk assessment processes?
- To what extent should governments involve the public in risk planning and risk assessment?
- How much international collaboration exists to respond to global risks?
Last week the Committee held its first evidence session, with Roger Hargreaves, Director of the Civil Contingencies Secretariat. The session can be watched back on Parliament TV.
