Lords explore creative industries and intellectual property provisions in FTAs
This afternoon, the House of Lords International Agreements Sub-Committee will hear from experts on intellectual property provisions and opportunities for the creative industries in Free Trade Agreement (FTA), as the UK continues to negotiate trade agreements with several international partners.
The session will cover questions over intellectual property rights, the prospect of the UK securing changes to CPTPP provisions and whether the UK should avoid shifting towards a US-style copyright regime.
The evidence session will be conducted on Zoom and can be followed at www.parliamentlive.tv from 4pm today (Wednesday 2 December).
Giving evidence will be:

- Gilane Tawadros, Chief Executive, Design and Artists Copyright Society (DACS)
- John McVay OBE, Chief Executive, Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television (Pact)
- Geoff Taylor, Chief Executive, British Phonographic Institute (BPI)

- What provisions are normally included in the intellectual property rights chapter of an FTA?
- What is your assessment of agreement provisions with the CPTPP and what the prospects are of the UK securing changes to any CPTPP provisions?
- Why is website blocking important and who does it impact in the creative industries How might it be introduced though a trade deal
- What would a US-style ‘fair use’ regime look like and how does it compare to the existing copyright regime in the UK?
- What provisions would be beneficial for musical artists and performers in FTAs?
