Lords to discuss post-Brexit common frameworks with Northern Ireland Assembly

Wednesday 9 December 2020

Members of the House of Lords Common Frameworks Scrutiny Committee will today hear evidence from the Committee for the Executive Office, which is responsible for overseeing the common frameworks programme in the Northern Ireland Assembly.

This will cover the role being performed by the Northern Ireland Assembly in scrutinising the common frameworks, the possible impact of the Northern Ireland Protocol on the common frameworks, and future scrutiny of the frameworks after they have been implemented.

The session will take place virtually on Wednesday 9 December at 2pm and can be followed on NI Assembly TV.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Colin McGrath, Chair, Social Democratic Labour Party
  • Doug Beattie, Deputy Chair, Ulster Unionist Party
  • Martina Anderson, Sinn Féin
  • Trevor Clarke, Democratic Unionist Party
  • Trevor Lunn, Independent
  • George Robinson, Democratic Unionist party
  • Pat Sheehan, Sinn Féin
  • Emma Sheerin, Sinn Féin
  • Christopher Stalford, Democratic Unionist Party

Questions members are likely to ask include:

  • What role is the Northern Ireland Assembly playing in scrutinising the common frameworks?
  • How engaged has the Northern Ireland Executive been with the common frameworks programme?
  • What impact could the Northern Ireland Protocol have on Northern Ireland’s participation in the common frameworks programme in the future?
  • To what extent should future scrutiny of the common frameworks be underpinned by greater cooperation between the UK and devolved legislatures?

Last week the Common Frameworks Scrutiny Committee heard from Chloe Smith MP, the minister responsible for overseeing common frameworks in the UK Government. The session can be watched back on Parliament TV.
