Peers to hear post-Brexit food and farming trade fears
Monday 14 December 2020
Food and farming bodies will air concerns about the impact of post-Brexit border checks and possible new tariffs on businesses across Britain when they meet peers this week.
The House of Lords EU Environment Sub-Committee will hear from food producers, processors and hauliers on Wednesday 16 December from 10 a.m. about ‘agri-food’ exports to the European Union from 1 January next year.
Topics and areas for discussion will include:
- Business implications of new non-tariff barriers away from the border;
- Practical implications of any additional border checks;
- Impacts of any post-transition tariffs (if a UK-EU free trade agreement is not in place); and
- Potential solutions and mitigations for issues expected to arise.
The sub-committee will hear from:
- June Arnold, Head of Policy, Grain and Feed Trade Association
- Jimmy Buchan, Chief Executive Officer, Scottish Seafood Association
- Duncan Buchanan, Director of Policy for England and Wales, Road Haulage Association
- Nick Fenwick, Head of Policy, Farmers’ Union of Wales
- Martin Morgan, Executive Manager, Scottish Association of Meat Wholesalers
- Helen Roberts, Development Officer, National Sheep Association Cymru/Wales Region
- Andrew Skea, Chair, Brexit Committee, British Potato Trade Association
The session will be live on Parliament TV.
