Lords Electoral Registration Act Committee to take evidence on electoral fraud and election law
On Tuesday 25 February 2020 the House of Lords Electoral Registration and Administration Act 2013 Committee will hear evidence on electoral fraud and election law from two panels of witnesses.
Giving evidence to the Committee at 3.30pm will be:
- Richard Mawrey QC.
At 4.30pm the Committee will hear from:
- Francis Hoar
- Gavin Millar QC.
Questions the Committee is likely to ask both panels include:
- How vulnerable do you think the electoral registration and voting systems are in the UK?
- Has the Electoral Registration Act 2013 achieved its ambition of tackling fraud?
- Is the election court system, as Lord Pickles described, “antiquated” and “useless” and designed to prevent cases being taken forward?
- Should there be a central complaints mechanism for voters?
- Should returning officers and electoral registration officers be subject to FOI requirements to help evidence gathering in the case of complaints being made?
- Should the Election Commission be given more enforcement powers?
- Is electoral law up to the task of dealing with fraud and voting offences?
