Lords inquiry on Sub-Saharan Africa to hear from Baroness Amos and Royal African Society Director
The House of Lords International Relations and Defence Committee will this week hear from former UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Baroness Amos and Dr Nick Westcott, Director of the Royal African Society.
In the first session with Dr Westcott the Committee will explore whether the UK Government has the right priorities in its relationship with Sub-Saharan Africa, security challenges in the region and the UK's role in tackling them and the growing influence of China and Russia in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Committee will then hear evidence from Baroness Amos who is Director of the School of Oriental and African Studies and former Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs at the UN. In this session questions will cover issues such as the UK's colonial legacy and its impact it the relationship with Sub-Saharan Africa, the role of the UN in the region and how well it works with the African Union and how the UK should balance promoting trade and investment opportunities with a commitment to poverty reduction.
