How can we tackle food poverty and health inequalities? Lords to ask initiatives and local authorities

The House of Lords Committee on Food, Poverty, Health and the Environment will next week take evidence from local authorities and initiatives involved in promoting healthy eating and sustainable food systems as it continues its inquiry.

The Committee will hear evidence across two sessions starting at 10:40am on Tuesday 4 February in Committee Room 2A of the House of Lords.

In the first session the Committee will hear evidence from:

  • Mr Tom Andrews, Programme Manager, Sustainable Food Cities
  • Mr Steve Butterworth, CEO, Neighbourly
  • Ms Alex Holt, Programme Lead, Food Active

The session will cover how the government can enable and encourage people, particularly those with lower incomes to eat a healthy diet, examples of good practice in establishing local partnerships between businesses, charities and local government to tackle food insecurity and how to embed sustainability in all levels of the food system.

The second session, which will start at 11:40am, will see the Committee take evidence from:

  • Ms Nicky Dennison, Public Health Specialist, Blackpool Council
  • Ms Katie Cuming, Public Health Consultant, Brighton and Hove Council
  • Ms Claire Pritchard, Chair, London Food Board

This session will cover how local authorities can respond to food poverty in their area, initiatives they have developed to address food insecurity and unhealthy diets, and what powers are available to local authorities to enable a healthier food environment for everybody.
