Lords Committee to hear from senior officials on UK's relationship with Sub-Saharan Africa
The House of Lords International Relations and Defence Committee will this week take evidence from senior officials from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department for International Development as it continues its inquiry into the UK's relationship with Sub-Saharan Africa.
The evidence session will start at 10:40am on Wednesday 29 January in Committee Room 4 of the House of Lords.
Giving evidence to the Committee will be:
- Harriet Mathews OBE, Director for Africa, Foreign and Commonwealth Office
- Jane Edmondson, Director for East and Central Africa, Department for International Development
Areas the session will cover include:
- The Government's new Africa strategy – why it was needed, the resources that will be allocated to it and what its priorities are.
- The effectiveness of the African Union in supporting economic, security and political development in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- How can the UK move beyond aid in its relationship with Africa and increase focus on trade and security issues?
- What were the outcomes from the recent UK-Africa Investment Summit?
- How is the UK working with Governments in Sub-Saharan Africa to mitigate the threats of climate change?
- The coordination of Africa policy across Government departments.
