Social care sector needs £8 billion now, not in the distant future
The House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee has written to the Minister of State for Care to urge the Government to act now to implement the most urgent recommendations in the Committee's July 2019 report, Social care funding: time to end a national scandal.
The social care sector, which was already severely overstretched prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, needs £8 billion of immediate and up-front investment in order to raise care quality and access to 2009/10 standards. Without this the gap between funding and need will continue to widen dangerously and the most vulnerable in society will suffer as a result.
Care workers should also be given more pay by publicly funded care providers. The sector's response to the pandemic must be recognised without further delay.
