Future of journalism: Peers to hear from industry representatives and on local journalism
The House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee continues its inquiry into the future of journalism with an evidence session today, Tuesday 9 June at 3 p.m., exploring local journalism and hearing from industry representatives.
The committee will hear from:
At 3pm:
- Edward Iliffe, Chief Executive Officer, Iliffe Media
- Adam Cantwell-Corn, co-founder, The Bristol Cable
Possible questions and topics for discussion include:
- What are the main obstacles to local news organisations being financially sustainable?
- How can public policy support local journalism to overcome these challenges?
- How successful has the BBC Local Democracy Reporter scheme been?
At 4pm:
- Ian Murray, Executive Director, Society of Editors
- Michelle Stanistreet, General Secretary, National Union of Journalists
Possible questions and topics for discussion include:
- Has the industry taken sufficient action to ensure that its workforce is representative of the population?
- How could the number of non-graduates entering journalism be increased?
- Is further action necessary to protect the freedom of the press, including protecting journalists from harassment?
