Lords EU Committee to hear evidence on the future of UK-EU professional and business services

On Thursday 11 June 2020 the House of Lords EU Services Sub-Committee will be holding its second public evidence session as part of its new inquiry into future UK-EU relationship on professional and business services.

This session will be held remotely. The session will be streamed on Parliament TV.

At 10am the Committee will hear from:

  • Edward Braham, Senior Partner, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP
  • Simon Davis, President, Law Society
  • Audley Sheppard QC, Chair of the Board, London Court of International Arbitration
  • David Joseph QC, Vice Chair, Commercial Bar Association.

Questions the Committee is likely to ask include:

  • What are the main trade barriers that the UK legal sector would like prioritised in the future UK-EU relationship?
  • How effective have existing EU trade deals such as the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) been in supporting trade in legal services?
  • What type of provisions on establishment rights should be included in a future UK-EU agreement?
  • How important is the mutual recognition of professional qualifications for UK legal practitioners?
  • Has the Government sufficiently engaged with the legal services sector on the development of the UK negotiating position and progress in the UK-EU negotiations?
  • What are the potential implications of Brexit for the UK's status as a global hub for legal services, including arbitration services?
  • What would the practical implications be for UK legal services providers, in particular smaller operators, of no agreement between the UK and EU?

On Friday 22 May 2020 the Committee invited written contributions to this inquiry. Click here to read the full call for evidence and find out how to submit evidence.
