Lords Committee to discuss food system reform
On Tuesday 10 March the House of Lords Committee on Food, Poverty, Health and the Environment will hear from National Food Strategy review lead Henry Dimbleby, catering industry representatives and delegates from the devolved administrations about fundamental changes that could be made to the UK's food system.
At 10:00 a.m. the Committee will hear from:
- Henry Dimbleby, National Food Strategy independent review lead and co-founder of the Leon restaurant chain
Henry's government-commissioned review into the UK food system will be used to develop a National Food Strategy for England. The session will cover his findings about our current food system and identify what needs to change most urgently to address health inequalities and ensure that the nation's diet is sustainable.
At 11:00 a.m. the Committee will hear from:
- Mark Laurie, Director, Nationwide Caterers Association
This session will cover the responsibilities of the catering system in addressing diet-related health problems. It will look at government regulation, portion size, price promotions, labelling, and fast food outlets.
At 11:45 a.m. the Committee will hear from:
- David Morris, Deputy Head of Food, Welsh Government
- George Burgess, Head of Food and Drink, Scottish Government
- Dr Donald Macaskill, Chief Executive, Scottish Care, Scottish Food Coalition
Scotland and Wales have national food strategies, and a series of interesting policies to tackle the very problems the Committee is concerned with: food insecurity, poor diets and health inequalities. The session will be an opportunity to share ideas, best practice and identify potential pitfalls in policy proposals around food.
This evidence session, which is open to the public, will take place on Tuesday 10 March at 10.00 a.m. in Committee Room 2A.
