Lords EU Committee launches new inquiry on the European Green Deal
On Wednesday 4 March 2020 the House of Lords EU Energy and Environment Sub-Committee is launching its new inquiry on the implications of the EU's Green Deal for the UK with an evidence session on the EU's carbon border adjustment proposals.
This inquiry has been launched by the Committee to explore the carbon border adjustment mechanism, farm-to-fork strategy, and the circular economy proposals.
Giving evidence to the Committee at 11.30am will be:
- Michael Mehling, Professor, University of Strathclyde Law School.
At 11.50am:
- Carolyn Fischer, Professor of environmental economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
- Misato Sato, Assistant Professorial Research Fellow, London School of Economics and Political Science.
Likely topics of discussion include:
- Should the UK welcome or be worried by the EU's carbon border adjustment mechanism proposals?
- If the UK and EU link emissions trading systems, how might the EU's carbon border adjustment mechanism apply to the UK?
- If the Government implements a domestic carbon tax, would the EU apply the mechanism to the UK?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of the UK being outside the EU's mechanism?
- Does the Government's ambition for the future relationship make one way of interacting with the carbon border adjustment mechanism more likely?
This evidence session, which is open to the public, will take place at 11.30am on Wednesday 4 March 2020 in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.
