Lords EU Committee to take evidence on the level playing field and state aid
How might the EU prioritise different elements of the level playing field? Has the UK benefitted from the EU's state aid control system, or have the rules hindered the UK's development?
These are among the questions the House of Lords EU Internal Market Sub-Committee will be asking a panel of witnesses on Thursday 5 March 2020.
Giving evidence to the Committee at 10.15am will be:
- Professor Andrea Biondi, Professor of EU Law, King's College London
- Dr Ulrich Soltész, Partner, Gleiss Lutz
- Professor Veerle Heyvaert, London School of Economics
- George Peretz QC, Monckton Chambers.
Other questions the Committee may ask include:
- Is the EU right to be concerned that the UK might engage in unfair competition with Member States once it is no longer bound by EU rules in areas such as state aid and the environment?
- What is the EU business community's assessment of the EU's negotiating stance on the level playing field?
- What will the role be of the UK independent enforcement authority requested by the EU?
- How effective do you think EU state aid rules have been in supporting the EU's objectives in other areas, such as the fight against climate change?
- Could the new Commission give more support to its environmental objectives by changing the EU state aid framework?
This evidence session, which is open to the public, will begin at 10.15am on Thursday 5 March 2020 in Committee Room 4a of the House of Lords.
