Chancellor of the Exchequer to face Lords Economic Affairs Committee questions
At 3pm on Tuesday 19 May 2020 the Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer, will appear before the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee in his first annual session with the Committee.
This public evidence session will have remote participation by the Chancellor and Committee members. The session will be streamed live on Parliament TV.
Questions the Committee is likely to ask include:
- How much will the Government's support schemes cost and when do these schemes become too expensive?
- Will you extend support to the self-employed as well, now that the Job Retention Scheme for employees has been extended until October?
- Will the Treasury adapt the Job Retention Scheme if the devolved administrations decide to maintain stricter lockdown measures for longer than in England?
- Do you believe that the crisis has highlighted problems with excessive debt in some companies? Should tax policy be revised to reduce the advantages of debt vs equity?
- How will the Treasury support local authority finances if the initial extra money does not cover the full cost of the pandemic?
- Will the Government now expedite its social care reforms?
- Will the rates of income tax, national insurance or VAT be increased in order to help restore the public finances?
