Lords EU Committee to quiz Michael Gove and David Frost on EU future relationship negotiations as deadline looms
The House of Lords EU Committee will this week take evidence from Michael Gove MP, Chancellor of the Dutchy of Lancaster and David Frost, the Chief Negotiator of Task Force Europe.
The evidence session comes ahead of the June EU/UK summit, which is expected to be crucial if a deal on the future relationship is to be agreed by the end of the year when the transition period ends.
The evidence session will start at 2:30pm on Thursday 28 May. It will be conducted virtually and can be followed at www.parliamentlive.tv
Areas the session will cover include:
- The significance of the forthcoming June negotiating round and the high-level summit that will follow later in June.
- How the Government will help business prepare for new arrangements, particularly if an agreement is reached only in October or November.
- What tariffs the Government would be willing to consider in future trade with the EU, if they were required to get through the impasse on level playing field concerns.
- Progress in negotiations on financial services.
- If the UK ceases to have access to EU police databases at the end of the year, how the Government will ensure there is no reduction in public security.
- The potential conflict between the EU negotiations and the other trade agreements the Government is pursuing, such as with Japan, the US, Australia or New Zealand.
