House of Lords COVID-19 Committee will explore how the increasing use of digital technology affects levels of physical activity
On Tuesday 1 December 2020 at 10.00am the House of Lords COVID-19 Committee will take evidence from London Sport, West Ham United Foundation, Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Bristol on the extent to which increasing internet use, and digitalisation of jobs and services, is linked to more sedentary lifestyles and what action can be taken to mitigate the risks to physical health.
The Committee will also explore the opportunities offered by innovative digital technology interventions to increase physical activity and improve physical health, as well as looking at the ways in which our use of digital technology may shape long-term physical health and levels of physical activity.
The evidence session will take place virtually and will be streamed live on Parliament TV.
Giving evidence will be:
10am
- Dr Sally Fowler-Davis, Associate Professor of Organisation in Health and Care, Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University;
- Dr Charlie Foster OBE, Professor of Physical Activity and Public Health at the Centre for Exercise, Nutrition and Health Sciences, University of Bristol;
- Tim Copley, Director of Insight, Technology and Data at London Sport; and
- Joseph Lyons, CEO of the West Ham United Foundation.
Some of the issues to be discussed include;
- Changes to physical activity levels as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic;
- Additional barriers to, or opportunities for, physical activity during the pandemic;
- The relationship between increasing reliance on digital technology in our everyday lives and levels of physical activity;
- The health risks of increasingly sedentary lifestyles and decreasing levels of physical activity;
- Opportunities for using digital technology to increase levels of physical activity; and
- The role that Government can play in maximising the opportunities for, and mitigating the risks to, our physical health that come from increasing digitalisation.
