How does our increasing reliance on digital technology impact our wellbeing in the long-term?

The House of Lords COVID-19 Select Committee will be exploring this issue as it kicks off its new inquiry next week by hearing oral evidence exploring digital exclusion.

On Tuesday, 10 November 2020 at 10am the Committee will hold a virtual session. While the session will not be broadcast live, transcripts of the evidence will be available later in the week.

Giving evidence will be:

10am

  • Richard Hart, Deputy Head of Libraries at Leeds City Council;
  • Douglas White, Head of Advocacy at the Carnegie UK Trust;
  • Helen Milner, CEO of Good Things Foundation; and
  • Ian Macrae, Director of Market Intelligence for Ofcom.

Some of the issues to be discussed include;

  • The distribution and speed of broadband services across the UK
  • Digital skill levels across different groups and communities
  • The impact of COVID-19 and what it means to be digitally excluded
  • Current interventions to tackle digital exclusion
  • The affordability of digital equipment and broadband services, particularly high-speed broadband and mobile data;
