Lords EU Goods Sub-Committee to take evidence on end-of-transition period readiness

On Monday 9 November 2020 the House of Lords EU Goods Sub-Committee will be holding two evidence sessions on post-transition customs IT systems and sector preparedness.

Both sessions will be held remotely and streamed on Parliament TV.

At 10.30am the Committee will hear from:

  • Steve Bartlett, Chair of the Association of Freight Software Suppliers (AFSS)
  • Des Hiscock, Regional CEO at Customs Support and Director General at The UK Association for International Trade (ACITA) 
  • Sonali Parekh, Director of Policy at the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) 
  • Neil Robinson, Chair of the Cumbria LEP Logistics Sector Panel and Managing Director at Tyson Burridge 
  • Alex Veitch, General Manager of Public Policy at Logistics UK. 

At 11.30am the Committee will hear from:

  • Sue Roberts, HMRC Director of Customs Transformation
  • Mark Denney, Director of IT, EU Transition and COVID-19 Chancellor Schemes at HMRC.

The topics that will be covered in these sessions include:

  • The IT systems being developed to support the movement of goods across the GB-EU border and whether HMRC is on track to deliver these in time for the end of the Brexit transition period.
  • Whether traders and the logistics industry have had enough time to familiarise themselves with the new IT systems.
  • Whether software suppliers will have sufficient time to update their systems to link into the new IT infrastructure.
  • Government engagement with small businesses on the roll-out of the systems and the new customs requirements.
  • COVID-19’s effects on traders and hauliers’ end-of-transition preparations.
  • The impact of the Customs Grant Scheme and whether it has increased the capacity of the intermediary sector to meet projected demand.
