Lords to hear from Minister on UK defence cooperation with EU post-transition

Next week, the House of Lords EU Security and Justice Committee will discuss the future of defence policy collaboration between the UK and EU, once the transition period ends on 31 December.
The evidence session will start at 9:45am on Tuesday 1 December and can be watched live on Parliament TV.
Topics will include questions on the UK’s future influence on EU policy as a third country, to the effects that the election of Biden could have on the UK defence landscape, hearing from defence Minister Baroness Goldie.
The evidence session is a follow-up to the Committee’s meeting with experts in September, where they heard that the UK’s key role in EU defence would diminish, although close cooperation is still achievable.
The witness will be:
- Baroness Annabel Goldie, Minister of State at the Ministry of Defence
Questions likely to be asked include:
- How will the UK exert influence on EU defence policy as a third country?
- Will the Government seek third country participation in CSDP missions and operations and/or in PESCO projects and if so, how?
- Will the Government seek to strengthen existing bilateral agreements with EU Member States for defence co-operation and forge new ones?
- How has Brexit inevitably influenced the forthcoming Integrated Review of Security, Defence, Development and Foreign Policy?
- What effect might the election of Joe Biden have on the UK’s future defence and security landscape?
