Online freedom of expression – Peers’ new inquiry to hear first evidence

Has the proliferation of online platforms changed public attitudes to freedom of expression? How can good digital citizenship be promoted?
These are among the likely questions when the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee launches its new inquiry into freedom of expression online with an evidence session tomorrow (Tuesday 24 November at 3.00 p.m.).
The committee will hear from:
- Ayishat Akanbi, cultural commentator
- Dr Jeffrey Howard, Associate Professor of Political Theory, UCL
Other possible questions and topics for discussion include:
- To what extent do online forms of expression differ from offline?
- How equally can people express themselves online?
- How should digital platforms balance protecting freedom of expression with reducing harm?
