Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham to give evidence to Lords Economic Affairs Committee

On Tuesday 27 October 2020 the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee will be taking evidence from two panels of witnesses.
These public evidence sessions will have remote participation by witnesses and Committee members. The session will be streamed live on Parliament TV.
The first session will begin at 3pm. Giving evidence will be:
- Andy Burnham, Mayor, Greater Manchester Combined Authority
- Steve Rotheram, Mayor, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.
Questions the Committee is likely to ask include:
- Why were the Government and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority unable to strike a deal last week?
- What support packages for local businesses were created in Greater Manchester and the Liverpool City Region before negotiations started with the Government?
- Why has the Government been so reluctant to introduce targeted support measures until last week?
- How has the crisis exacerbated regional inequality across the UK, and inequalities within Greater Manchester and Liverpool?
- How can the Government’s disparate skills and training policies – for instance, lifelong learning, apprenticeships, and employment support – be better aligned to aid a sustainable recovery?
The second session will begin at 4pm. Giving evidence will be:
- Nisha Katona MBE, founder of Mowgli Street Food restaurants and television presenter
- Mark Da Vanzo, Chief Executive, Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse
- Maria McDonnell, School Director, Liverpool School of English
- Steven Hesketh, Chief Executive Officer, Savvy Hotel Group.
Questions the Committee is likely to ask include:
- How have Tier 3 restrictions affected your business, and level of demand for your services? What effect has this had on the people you employ?
- How has the way that the Government has announced new restrictions, and economic support packages, affected your ability to plan?
- How helpful were the COVID-19 loan schemes that the Government offered to businesses?
- How much support and guidance have you had from local government?What action or type of support from Government would make the most difference in protecting your business and the jobs of those that you employ?
