Lords EU Committee to quiz Michael Gove and David Frost on EU talks and UK Internal Market Bill

On Wednesday, the House of Lords EU Committee will question the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and the UK’s Chief Negotiator on the progress of negotiations with the EU, implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol, and the consequences of the EU’s recent announcement to commence infringement proceedings over Part 5 of the UK Internal Market Bill.
The evidence session will take place from 2pm on Wednesday 7 October and can be viewed on parliamentlive.tv
Witnesses:
- The Rt Hon Michael Gove MP, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and UK Co-Chair of the UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement Joint Committee
- Lord Frost, Europe Advisor to the Prime Minister and Chief Negotiator of Task Force Europe at the Cabinet Office
Questions likely to be asked in the session include:
- In light of the Prime Minister’s meeting on Saturday with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, when will the future relationship negotiations with the EU conclude?
- What are the legal, political and diplomatic consequences of the EU’s commencement of infringement proceedings over Part 5 of the United Kingdom Internal Market Bill?
- What are the remaining gaps between the UK and EU positions on the Northern Ireland Protocol’s provisions on goods at risk, exit summary declarations and State aid?
- What principles does the Government think should underpin a UK-EU agreement on State aid?
- Will the necessary checks, processes and infrastructure for the movement of goods, both to and from the EU and to Northern Ireland, be ready for 1 January 2021?
- Will agreement be reached with the EU on future policing, security and civil law cooperation?
