Peers to explore BAME people’s access to public services during lockdown

Peers looking into how COVID-19 has affected public services and lessons to be learned from the lockdown will explore what the outbreak has taught providers about improving access for BAME users, and what challenges BAME people have faced since the outbreak began.
The House of Lords Public Services Committee will take evidence tomorrow (Wednesday 9 September from 3 p.m.) from:
- Lord Woolley of Woodford, Director, Operation Black Vote and former Advisory Chair of the Race Disparity Unit
- Professor Claire Alexander, Associate Director, Centre on Dynamics of Ethnicity, University of Manchester
Possible questions include:
- Can existing inequalities of access to public services account for higher coronavirus death rates among BAME people?
- What should the Government do in the future to improve access to public services for BAME people?
- What has been the effect of local lockdowns on BAME people’s ability to access public services in those areas?
