EU Committee to take evidence on financial services after Brexit

On Thursday 14 January 2021 the House of Lords EU Services Sub-Committee will hold a public evidence session on financial services after Brexit.

At 10am the Committee will hear from:

  • Miles Celic, Chief Executive Officer, TheCityUK
  • Nick Collier, Managing Director (Brussels), City of London Corporation.

This session will be held remotely and streamed on Parliament TV.

Questions the Committee is likely to ask include:

  • Has the end of the transition period brought any unexpected developments?
  • How do you assess the section on financial services in the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement?
  • Is the timetable for agreeing by March a memorandum of understanding establishing a framework for structured regulatory cooperation on financial services realistic?
  • The European Commission has said it cannot finalise its assessments of the UK’s equivalence without further clarification about how the UK will diverge. Given that HM Treasury says it has provided as much clarity as it can, is it realistic to expect any further equivalence decisions from the EU?
  • Which are the most important areas for further EU equivalence decisions?
  • What is your assessment of the Government’s plans to diverge from EU regulations, as expressed in the Financial Services Bill and the Financial Services Future Regulatory Framework Review consultation?

On Monday 30 November 2020, the Committee took evidence from John Glen MP, Economic Secretary and City Minister, HM Treasury. You can watch the session on Parliament TV or read the transcript.
