Lords committee quizzes Sir Dieter Helm on delivering net zero
Monday 19 July 2021
The House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee will tomorrow question Sir Dieter Helm, Professor of Economic Policy at the University of Oxford. In 2017, the Government commissioned Professor Helm to produce a Cost of Energy Review to investigate the effectiveness of UK energy policy.
The session will take place on Tuesday 20 July at 10.30am and will be publicly available to watch on Parliament TV.
The session continues the Committee’s inquiry into the energy market regulator, Ofgem, and the UK’s path to net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Sir Dieter, an Oxford fellow for 30 years and chairman of the Government's advisory body on natural capital, was knighted in 2021 for his services to the environment, energy, and utilities policy.
Possible questions for Sir Dieter include:
- Is there a clear overall plan for delivering net zero? What should be the key elements of that plan?
- How do you believe the transition to net zero should be regulated?
- Should the cost burden of net zero fall on billpayers or taxpayers?
- What progress has been made since your Cost of Energy Review in 2017?
The Committee invites written evidence from interested individuals and organisations in its Call for Evidence, as part of its ongoing inquiry into Ofgem and net zero.
