Lords COVID-19 Committee to hold second session with Town and City leaders on the long-term impact of the pandemic

Friday 16 July 2021

Continuing its inquiry into the long-term consequences of the pandemic for towns and cities and how these might change priorities for their future, next week the COVID-19 Select Committee will hold the second of its evidence sessions with town and city leaders.

The session will also explore how the pandemic’s impact on towns and cities will affect different communities, impact existing inequalities and risk creating new inequalities.

The session will take place virtually on Tuesday 20 July from 9.45am and will be available to watch live or on demand at Parliament TV.

Giving evidence will be:

9.45am

  • Stephen Martin, Mayor of Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council;
  • Hazel Simmons MBE, Leader of Luton Borough Council; and
  • Rob Stewart, Leader of Swansea Council.

Themes for discussion

  • The biggest long-term consequences of the pandemic for towns and cities;
  • The changes made to the long-term plans and priorities for individual towns and cities to tackle the impacts of the pandemic;
  • The long-term vision for high streets;
  • Any exciting changes or innovations that may help to regenerate towns and cities post-pandemic;
  • The potential for the pandemic to exacerbate existing inequalities or create new inequalities; and
  • The support needed from the UK Government to deliver the priorities and plans for post-pandemic towns and cities.
