Business experts to give evidence on CPTPP and UK-Australia negotiations
Tuesday 15 June 2021
The House of Lords International Agreements Committee will tomorrow be questioning business experts on the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), with regards to tariff liberalisation, regulations and technical barriers to trade, and the environment. The committee will also seek evidence on the UK-Australia negotiations, which are billed as a gateway to the CPTPP.
The session will take place virtually on Wednesday 16 June at 4.00pm and can be followed on Parliament TV.
Giving evidence will be:
- Alessandro Marongiu, International Trade Policy Manager, SMMT
- Ian Cranshaw, Head of International Trade, Chemicals Industries Association
- Paul Alger, Director of International Business, UK Fashion and Textile Association
Questions the committee is likely to ask include:
- What are the businesses you represent seeking in terms of market access by joining the Trans-Pacific Agreement?
- What opportunities does joining the Trans-Pacific Agreement offer beyond what may be gained bilaterally through future trade agreements with individual member countries?
- Should the UK be seeking specific carveouts from the Trans-Pacific Agreement and if so, what areas should they cover?
- What is your assessment of the provisions on technical barriers to trade in the agreement?
- What are the opportunities and risks of a bilateral FTA with Australia?
- What would the impact of accession to the Trans-Pacific Agreement and a UK-Australia future trade agreement be on UK objectives on climate change and environmental protection, in relation to the manufacturing industries?
