European Affairs: Ministers and EU ambassador to face Lords committee

Monday 21 June 2021

The House of Lords European Affairs Committee will hear from government ministers and the European Union’s ambassador to Britain this week (Tuesday 22 June at 4.00 p.m. and Thursday 24 June at 10.00 a.m.).

On Tuesday the committee will hear from:

  • Kevin Foster, Minister for Future Borders and Immigration
  • Wendy Morton, Minister for European Neighbourhood

The committee will explore citizen’s rights in Britain and the EU with the ministers ahead of the impending deadline for the EU Settlement Scheme and equivalent deadlines in certain EU member states. The scheme is due to expire in less than two weeks with an estimated 300,000 applications from EU citizens in the UK not yet fully processed by the Home Office.

On Thursday the committee will hear from, for the first time:

  • João Vale de Almeida, Ambassador, European Commission

The committee will question the ambassador on the relationship between Britain and the European Union, including how the Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the two is working and whether the right mechanisms are in place to deal with a lack of trust between the two parties. Other possible topics to be discussed include the recent forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Belarus, and what steps the EU is taking to engage with communities in Northern Ireland.

The sessions will be live on Parliament TV.
