Lords committee quizzes economists on the costs of net zero

The House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee will discuss Ofgem, the UK’s energy market regulator, and its role in reaching the Government’s net zero target with leading economists at its next public evidence session tomorrow.
On Tuesday 29 June at 10.15am, the Committee will press experts on the main challenges facing Ofgem including the costs of net zero, insecurity of energy supply and how to protect vulnerable consumers.
The Committee will question:
- Catherine Waddams, Emeritus Professor, Norwich Business School
- Joe Perkins, Senior Vice President and Head of Research, Compass Lexecon
- Cloda Jenkins, Professor of Economics, University College London
Likely questions include:
- How should net zero be financed?
- Does net zero conflict with consumer interests? Could more market competition drive down costs?
- What should be Ofgem’s role in reaching net zero?
- How does Ofgem compare with other energy market regulators?
