Lords Constitution Committee to question Lord Chancellor

The House of Lords Constitution Committee will tomorrow hold its annual evidence session with the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice.
The committee will hear from the Rt Hon Robert Buckland QC MP, about various issues, including the role of the Lord Chancellor, judicial review reform, court backlogs, funding for the justice system, judicial independence, Welsh legislation and future constitutional reform.
Questions the committee is likely to ask include:
- You have said that you are examining the role of the Lord Chancellor. In what respects do you consider the role in need of reform?
- What is the latest on the Government’s judicial review consultation and what should we expect to see in the Judicial Review Bill?
- How confident are you that the current strategy to reduce the courts backlog is working?
- How will you ensure that sufficient funding continues to be made available to the justice system in future years?
- Does Government plan to reform the Supreme Court and, if so, what form will any changes take?
- Are you concerned about recent criticism of judges and lawyers by senior members of the Government? What steps will you take if these criticisms continue?
The session will take place virtually on Wednesday 9 June at 10.15am and can be followed live on Parliament TV.
