Lords Sport Committee to hear evidence on community work by professional clubs
Tuesday 22 June 2021
The House of Lords Committee on Sport and Recreation will this week hear evidence from professional football and rugby clubs on the work they do in their local communities to encourage people to be more active.
The Committee will hear from witnesses from the charitable arms of Everton FC, Saracens and Accrington Stanley as it explores the role professional clubs can play in supporting their local communities. Witnesses include Steve Johnson, Disability Manager at Everton in the Community and former World Amputee Footballer of the Year.
Issues to be discussed include the role of professional athletes in inspiring people to be more active and how professional clubs work with local authorities and other organisations to promote active lifestyles in their local area.
The Committee will also hold an evidence session looking at non-traditional sport and recreation and how activities such as angling, yoga and group exercise classes can play a role in getting the country moving. The session will touch on whether Sport England and other funding bodies give enough support to non-traditional forms of exercise and physical activity.
The evidence sessions will start at 3:30pm on Wednesday 23 June. The full witness details are:
3:30pm
- Gordon Banks, Chief Community Officer, Saracens Sport Foundation
- Martin Fearon, CEO, Accrington Stanley Community Trust
- Steve Johnson, Disability Manager, Everton in the Community
