Lords to question Ministers on the UK’s security and economic priorities for its relationship with China

On Wednesday 9 June 2021, the House of Lords International Relations and Defence Committee will hear from Nigel Adams MP, Minister of State for Asia, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Graham Stuart MP, Minister for Exports, Department of International Trade as part of its ongoing inquiry into the UK’s trade and security relationship with China.
The session will take place virtually from 10.00am and will be available to watch live or on demand at Parliament TV.
Questions will include:
- What are the Government’s priorities for its relationship with China? What values is it trying to uphold? What are the strategic priorities?
- The Integrated Review defines China as a ‘systemic competitor’. What does this mean? What are the areas of competition between the UK and China? In which sectors or policy areas do you see China as a competitor or a threat?
- What are the Government’s priorities for an economic relationship with China now the UK has left the European Union? Which are the priority sectors for both exports and investments?
- How is the Government seeking to balance concerns around, for example, human rights and labour protections with ambitions to increase economic co-operation with Beijing?
- To what extent is the Government seeking to cooperate with China on climate change, and in what ways? How might the Government approach this issue at COP26?
