Lords Sport and Recreation Committee to hear from New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister on how his country encourages sport participation and active lifestyles

The House of Lords Committee on a National Plan for Sport and Recreation will this week take evidence from Grant Robertson, Deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand and Dr Alice Hume, Policy Manager at Sport New Zealand, as it explores how the country is working to reduce drop-out rates for participation in sport, and the impact of its ‘well-being budget’, which attempts to focus on increasing well-being as well as economic growth.
The witnesses will give evidence to the Committee from 6pm on Wednesday 3 March. The virtual evidence session can be followed live on Parliament TV.
Questions the Committee will put to Minister Robertson and Dr Hume include:
- What impact has the introduction of a ‘well-being budget’ in 2019 had on funding for sport and recreation in New Zealand?
- How they measure whether efforts to increase participation in sport and reduce drop-of rates among key age groups are successful?
- The challenges of increasing diversity of those participating in sport as well as amongst coaches and administrators.
- The lessons the UK Government can take from New Zealand in seeking to increase activity levels among the population.
