Nuclear, oil and gas sector experts to give evidence on risk assessment in the UK

The House of Lords Risk Assessment and Risk Planning Committee will tomorrow question experts from the nuclear, oil and gas sectors on the sectors’ resilience to risk, as well as the challenges involved in developing and implementing risk assessment processes.
The session will take place virtually on Wednesday 10 March and can be followed on Parliament TV.
Giving evidence at 10.15am will be:
- Dame Sue Ion, Honorary President at National Skills Academy for Nuclear
- Professor Stephen Richardson, President of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and Emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College School, City, University of London
Questions the Committee is likely to ask include:
- What, in your view, are the greatest risks faced by the nuclear, oil and gas sectors?
- Do we have an undue focus in our conversation around risk on high-profile disasters over day-to-day risks such as waste storage, decommissioning, minor leaks, transportation etc.?
- What were the key lessons learnt from disasters such as Piper Alpha and Fukushima, and have these lessons been acted upon?

- Will Webster, Energy Policy Manager at Oil and Gas UK
Questions the Committee is likely to ask include:
- How effective are the nuclear, oil and gas sectors in embedding safety processes?
- How are the sectors managing the risk posed by cyber-threats?
- Looking to the current situation in Texas, what are the nuclear, oil and gas sectors doing to ensure the resilience of the UK’s energy supply?
