Vulnerable children Think tanks and local government leaders face Lords committee

Think tanks and local government leaders will be questioned by the House of Lords Public Services Committee tomorrow (Wednesday 12 May from 3.00 p.m.) as it continues its inquiry into vulnerable children and public services.

The committee will hear from:

  • Dr Jo Casebourne, Chief Executive, Early Intervention Foundation
  • Mike Brewer, Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Economist, Resolution Foundation
  • Sarah Kincaid, Assistant Director, Crest Advisory

Likely questions and areas of discussion include:

  • According to research evidence, what is driving this increase in child vulnerability?
  • What is the link between funding for early intervention approaches and outcomes for vulnerable children?
  • What would a good, joined-up approach to reducing child vulnerability in a local system look like?

At 4.00 p.m.

  • Cllr Lucy Nethsingha, Lead Member for Children and Young People Board, Local Government Association, and Cambridgeshire County Councillor
  • Jenny Coles, Director of Children’s Services, Hertfordshire County Council

Likely questions and areas of discussion include:

  • How do councils define child vulnerability, assess the number of vulnerable children and identify the support that they need?
  • How do councils support vulnerable children and families who do not reach the threshold for statutory support?
  • What support do councils need from central Government to reduce child vulnerability?
