Digital economy minister and AI experts to give evidence to Lords inquiry
Monday 22 November 2021
Are regulators subject to sufficient Parliamentary oversight?
That is one of the likely questions when Tech and Digital Economy minister Chris Philp appears before peers tomorrow (Tuesday 23 November from 3.00pm) as the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee continues its latest inquiry.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) experts will be quizzed too by the committee. The inquiry is exploring the effectiveness of digital regulation and how to ensure that it is forward-looking, joined-up, and subject to Parliamentary scrutiny.
The committee will hear from:
At 3.00pm:
- Chris Philp, Minister for Tech and the Digital Economy
- Lizzie Greenhalgh, Deputy Director for Digital Regulation, Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport
Other possible questions to the minister include:
- What are the key challenges in ensuring effective digital regulation?
- How can the right balance be achieved between giving regulators sufficient flexibility to respond to the pace of technological change and providing legal clarity?
- How can regulatory horizon-scanning be improved?
At 4.00pm:
- Tabitha Goldstaub, Co-founder, CogX and Chair at AI Council
- Sam Altman, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, OpenAI
Likely questions include:
- To what extent does AI pose new challenges for regulation?
- What are the key implications of AI for society, and how should concerns about these be considered by regulators?
- How does the development and regulation of AI vary across the world?
The session will be live on Parliament TV.
