Local Government Association to give evidence on UK governance

Tuesday 30 November 2021

The House of Lords Constitution Committee will tomorrow question local government leaders on devolution in England, levelling up and funding arrangements for local and combined authorities, as it continues its inquiry into the future governance of the UK.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Cllr James Jamieson, Chair, Local Government Association
  • Cllr Nick Forbes, Local Government Association Labour Group Leader

Questions the committee is likely to ask include:

  • Is further devolution to local government in England necessary?
  • Has the ad hoc deal approach to English devolution been a success?
  • Should elected mayors be a prerequisite for further devolution?
  • As English devolution is extended what accountability structures should accompany it?
  • What should the key priorities be in the Government’s forthcoming Levelling Up White Paper?
  • Do the current funding arrangements for local and combined authorities need to be reconsidered?
  • Is a change of political and administrative culture required in Whitehall?

The session will take place on Wednesday 1 December October at 11.00am and can be followed on Parliament TV
