Channel 4’s future: DCMS minister to give evidence to Lords inquiry

Tuesday 19 October

Julia Lopez, Minister of State for Media, Data and Digital Infrastructure, will give evidence today (Tuesday 19 October at 2.45 p.m.) to the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee as part of its inquiry into the future of broadcaster Channel 4.

Ministers are consulting on the possible privatisation of Channel 4 – the government’s preferred option - and now peers are investigating its remit and ownership.

Likely questions include:

  • To what extent is Channel 4 unsustainable and over what timescale?
  • If Channel 4 is privatised what would be the benefits and risks of strengthening or codifying the channel’s remit?
  • Has the Government made an impact assessment of the possible effects of privatisation on the independent production sector?
  • How has the Government considered the possible privatisation of Channel 4 as part of the wider UK public service broadcasting system?

The session will be live on Parliament TV.
