Leader of SDLP to give evidence on UK Governance

Tuesday 26 October 2021

The House of Lords Constitution Committee will tomorrow question Colum Eastwood MP, leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party, as part of its inquiry into the future governance of the United Kingdom.

Questions the committee is likely to ask Mr Eastwood include:

  • What is the current state of the Union from your perspective?
  • What impact has the NI Protocol had on the Union?
  • Does the Northern Ireland Executive have a single view of how well the proposed reforms to intergovernmental structures would work?
  • You have supported UK Government intervention on abortion law and Irish language legislation but have expressed concerns about its intention to legislate for a statute of limitations. How do you determine when it is legitimate for the UK Parliament to legislate in a devolved area and when it should not?
  • In light of the strains experienced by the legislative consent process, do you believe that it needs to be strengthened or reformed?
  • Do you support devolution of greater tax powers to the Northern Ireland Assembly?
  • What are your views on the UK Government’s powers to spend money in devolved areas under the Internal Market Act 2020, including the creation of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund?

The session will take place on Wednesday 27 October at 10.00am and can be followed on Parliament TV.
