Party leaders to give evidence on the future governance of the UK

Tuesday 19 October

The Alliance Party and the Social Democratic and Labour Party will tomorrow appear before the House of Lords Constitution Committee to give evidence on the future governance of the United Kingdom. The current state of the Union, devolved competence and legislative consent, and constitutional reform will be amongst the topics discussed.

The session will take place on Wednesday 20 October at 10.15 AM and can be followed on Parliament TV

Giving evidence will be:

  • Naomi Long MLA, Leader of the Alliance Party
  • Colum Eastwood MP, Leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party

Questions the committee is likely to ask include:

  • Once finalised, will the proposed reforms to intergovernmental structures help build trust and cooperation between the UK Government and the devolved administrations?
  • In what circumstances is it acceptable for the UK Government to legislate in devolved areas?
  • Do you support further devolution of tax powers to the Northern Ireland Assembly?
  • What are your views on the UK Government’s powers to spend money in devolved areas under the Internal Market Act 2020, including the creation of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund?
  • Are more significant reforms to the UK’s territorial constitution desirable to manage relations between London and the nations and regions, or are more modest changes to the current arrangements preferable?
