What’s the future of energy regulation? Lords questions energy providers

Monday 25 October 2021

The House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee will hear from both large and smaller energy suppliers as it continues to investigate energy market regulator Ofgem and its role in reaching net zero.

The session will also explore why the UK consumer energy market has been so badly affected by the international energy crisis and what this might mean for future energy market regulation.

The session will take place on Tuesday 26 October and is available to watch live on Parliament TV. Committee rooms are not currently open to the public.

Giving evidence at 10.30am:

  • Chris O’Shea, CEO, Centrica
  • Paul Spence, Director of Strategy and Corporate Affairs, EDF Energy

At 11.30am:

  • Juliet Davenport, Founder and Director, Good Energy
  • Greg Jackson, Founder and CEO, Octopus Energy

Likely questions for discussion include:

  • Is there a clear policy framework to support a net zero energy system
  • Do energy companies have enough clarity on net zero?
  • How do you believe net zero transition should be regulated?
  • Should net zero target be more explicit in Ofgem’s remit?
  • Who should fund the costs of net zero transition?
  • How might a more renewable energy system affect UK energy supply security?
  • How will net zero impact consumer experience?
  • Why have so many retail energy suppliers been badly hit by the energy crisis?
  • What is the future of retail energy regulation
